Madonna, Annie Lennox, Salma Hayek, Geri Halliwell&#8230; The list goes on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.muzzleofbees.com\/2008\/06\/14\/photos-aimee-mann-pabst-theater-milwaukee\/\" title=\"Aimee Mann June 2008\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.fatalemedia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/aimee-mann-pabst-theater-6-2008.jpg\" alt=\"Aimee Mann June 2008\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even <strong>Aimee Mann<\/strong> has been known to wear men\u2019s neckties. Here she is in a June 2008 performance at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Celebrities<\/strong> \u2013 women in particular \u2013 change their looks and images all the time. They have to. And face it, these celebrities are <strong>all femmes<\/strong>. Even in menswear, they keep the makeup and earrings and women\u2019s panties. Chances are good there are <strong>no jockey shorts<\/strong> under their getups.<\/p>\n<p>Dressing up for your lover is fun. And <strong>dressing up for sex<\/strong> is a tradition in BDSM\u2014one of our favorite sex costumes is that of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fatalemedia.com\/videos\/full_load.html\">Mistress Cobra in Full Load<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>real life<\/strong> is another matter. Most <strong>butches<\/strong> we know wear <strong>only men\u2019s attire<\/strong>. This is not \u201cwomen dressing in men\u2019s clothes\u201d the way Madonna and Annie Lennox have been known to do when the mood strikes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fatalemedia.com\/press.html\" title=\"Nan Kinney\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.fatalemedia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/n_kinney.jpg\" alt=\"Nan Kinney\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For butches, <strong>menswear is a way of life<\/strong>. It is part of who they are, and Nan counts herself among them. Here is Phyllis Christopher\u2019s head shot of Nan. Not quite the same look as Aimee Mann&#8217;s, is it?<\/p>\n<p>Then we think of Ellen. She too wears men\u2019s clothing. An out dyke, <a href=\"http:\/\/ellen.warnerbros.com\/\">Ellen DeGeneres<\/a> falls into both the <strong>Celebrity and Butch Dyke<\/strong> camps.<\/p>\n<p>Categories morph. Mores change. What\u2019s <strong>permissible<\/strong> now was not always the case. <strong>Passing women<\/strong> took huge risks in the last centuries.
