We\u2019d like to put our hat in the ring and say, \u201cWe too defend marriage<\/strong>.\u201d For anybody. For everybody<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

All this Defense of Marriage Act <\/strong>back-and-forth has reached, as the New York Times put it, \u201ca tipping point.\u201d Adam Lipak\u2019s article last Sunday, \u201cA Tipping Point for Gay Marriage<\/a>,\u201d pointed out that the legal community <\/strong>is often ahead of the curve when it comes to forward-thinking ideas and acceptance <\/strong>of those ideas in the general public.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Long before gay marriage <\/strong>becomes legal throughout the United States, legal decisions such as Lawrence v. Texas<\/a>, decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003, which in essence legalized gay sex <\/strong>(sodomy, to be precise).<\/p>\n

Now we have international law firm King & Spalding<\/a>, based in Atlanta, withdrawing from a case that would have put them in a position to defend the Defense of Marriage Act. Marriage should be between one man and one woman, that act says. The law firm doesn\u2019t want to alienate its law-school recruits<\/strong>, among other things. Good. Let them withdraw.<\/p>\n

If it takes the legal community to lead the way in legalizing gay marriage, so be it.<\/p>\n
