He was 47 years old and had long battled cancer, specifically Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma. In 2011 he won the <strong>Thurber Prize for American Humor<\/strong> for his book <em>Half Empty<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/11\/books\/david-rakoff-award-winning-humorist-dies-at-47.html?smid=pl-share\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/11\/books\/david-rakoff-award-winning-humorist-dies-at-47.html?smid=pl-share\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times\u2019 obituary<\/a> noted his style as \u201c<strong>amiable dyspepsia<\/strong> with an almost palpable undercurrent of melancholy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We listened to David Rakoff\u2019s stories on <a title=\"www.thisamericanlife.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\" target=\"_blank\">This American Life<\/a>, hosted by <strong>Ira Glass<\/strong> and a\u00a0show where\u00a0we have long heard and begun to appreciate new voices in <strong>storytelling and humor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a title=\"http:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\/radio-archives\/episode\/472\/our-friend-david\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\/radio-archives\/episode\/472\/our-friend-david\" target=\"_blank\">Our Friend David<\/a>,\u201d the current edition of <em>This American Life<\/em>,\u00a0 is dedicated to David Rakoff\u2019s life and stories.
