Bye-Bye Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

It’s official. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the Clinton-era compromise on gays in the military, is done, gone, repealed as of midnight last night.

A piece on NPR, “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is Done; Now What?,” about the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal, has some good quotes. One of our faves, from Stacy Vasquez: “I like to say I’m a government-certified homosexual.”

We thank Grethe Cammermeyer for drawing our attention to this issue many years ago. We hope she, like so many of her compatriots, is celebrating a long-awaited victory today.

Sexy September

As the weather finally cool down a bit, we’re happy to be snuggling up inside. For some reason, this has been a long, long summer. We’re ready to say enjoy some romantic, cozy days.

We like Deborah Sundahl’s recommendation for parents and couples so busy they can’t find time to enjoy each other’s company. Her new “Ask Fanny” column addresses the issues: “Finding Time for Romance.”

The New York Times had a piece earlier this week—front page, no less—on bullying in Minnesota. It happens everywhere, not just in Minnesota, and we’re glad to see attention brought to this issue of bullying gay kids.

Summer Sale – It’s Still On – No Minimums

Okay, this is a good deal, and we decided to offer a summer sale because it’s the dog days of summer here, hot and sticky or hot and dry, depending on where you live.

One of the best ways to escape is to retreat to an air-conditioned lair and make wild, beautiful love.

The past couple weeks have seen riots in London, escalated war in Afghanistan and Iraq, escalated violence in Syria. Here in the U.S. the Congress could hardly get itself to its summer vacation for inability to agree on matters of state and economy.

Yet we smile every time we get your notes and letters and know that despite everything there is love here, there is love in the world, and making love is one retreat into pure pleasure. Worthwhile pleasure, too.

On Sunday we walked along a path beside a beautiful lake, just the two of us, and it was like when we first fell in love. Both of us smiling, talking.

Summertime Sex Tips

With heat waves sweeping the U.S. west to east, and with air conditioning not always the answer (we don’t have one), we thought we’d offer up a few summertime sex tips:

–Make love outside (up on the roof or out on the fire escape or out back in a tent)

—Sleep outside so you’ll be in the mood for more sex outside

–Take a cold shower together…the cool buzz will last the rest of the night

–Go skinny-dipping, especially good if you’ve got a place by the water or a friend with a pool; you can put cold water in the hot tub too!

–Go to the movies, make out in the back-row seats (this is a time-tested New York City solution to heat waves).

Happy Pride 2011

On the verge of the largest state so far to ratify gay marriage, we wish everyone a Happy Gay Pride. This year saw the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, too, a milestone.

Another letter from a friend surprised us when it arrived last week. What about “talking dirty?” he wanted to know.

Marriage and Its Defenders

We’d like to put our hat in the ring and say, “We too defend marriage.” For anybody. For everybody.

All this Defense of Marriage Act back-and-forth has reached, as the New York Times put it, “a tipping point.” Adam Lipak’s article last Sunday, “A Tipping Point for Gay Marriage,” pointed out that the legal community is often ahead of the curve when it comes to forward-thinking ideas and acceptance of those ideas in the general public.

Long before gay marriage becomes legal throughout the United States, legal decisions such as Lawrence v. Texas, decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003, which in essence legalized gay sex (sodomy, to be precise).

Now we have international law firm King & Spalding, based in Atlanta, withdrawing from a case that would have put them in a position to defend the Defense of Marriage Act. Marriage should be between one man and one woman, that act says. The law firm doesn’t want to alienate its law-school recruits, among other things. Good. Let them withdraw.

If it takes the legal community to lead the way in legalizing gay marriage, so be it.

Frolicking

Does springtime make you frisky as a colt, wanting to frolic and show off? Wanting to take off all your clothes just because it’s beautiful outside and besides, why not?

Winter blues are gone. There are a thousand sexy moves you want to make. You feel sexier than ever.

Hah! We’re happy just watching the birds trying to make a nest outside Christi’s office window, and admiring the spring flowers all in bloom.

Nan’s birthday is May 2nd, and already we’re plotting and planning a lovers’ getaway weekend. Hot springs, massages, a completely romantic two days.

Happy Spring

Spring is here. At last. The tulips are everywhere, as are the daffodils. Trees that may or may not be crabapple trees are blooming with white flowers. The cherry tree next door has got an aura of pink about it.

We cleaned out the closets this weekend, with the sole purpose of donating Christi’s much-loved but now too small cocktail dresses to a high-school prom dress “auction.” It works like this: people donate old prom dresses, cocktail dresses, bridesmaid dresses and the like—old tuxes are welcome too. The local group that organizes this “promwear recycling” then holds an auction. The money raised goes to charity.
