Taking a Break

It’s not just the publicity stunts of Donald Trump and Company that’s got us in a mood for a break. It feels like that moment of calm before March Madness and the Final Four. Easter—Peeps and Cadbury Creme Eggs, anyone? Baseball’s Opening Day.

Lots of other people must be feeling it too, because we’ve had a run on Bend Over Boyfriend and Bend Over Boyfriend 2.

Most people have been buying both to save 15%. It’s a good deal.

It’s been an eventful month for us, with a trip Minnesota to visit family, and that was lovely.

A friend said to us the other day, “I don’t participate in that manmade holiday”—meaning, Valentine’s Day.

But a swinging, single neighbor held a swinging singles-only party to celebrate the day. And why not? It’s a great excuse for a party.

We played it low-key and romantic.

Romance has a place in the world. Otherwise there wouldn’t be so many YA novels and movies for all ages.

Ellen DeGeneres has been named the #1 most influential person among gay movers and shakers, out-influencing Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook. Out magazine named its Power 50.

Ellen moved up from the #2 spot last year. One reason, Out’s editors noted, was because it was “time to rethink how we ranked the profiles of the 50 most powerful lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in America” in terms of their business and cultural influence, power-brokering having changed “immeasurably over the last few years alone.”

Among the Power 50, we were also very happy to see Rachel Maddow and Brittney Griner included.

Greetings from Nan and Christi

April is finally a time we can relax. No holidays—until Passover and Easter—and, for us, not much travel. We had hoped to go to the Feminist Porn Conference and the Feminist Porn Awards in Toronto again this year, but alas it wasn’t meant to be.

Still, all this weekend, we’ll be following the Tweets coming from #FPCon2 and #SmartSmut.

We did get a chance to go to Key West last month to visit Christi’s parents and relax in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Our anniversary is next week, so we made plans to go to a lovely Japanese spa next Friday night. The private tub has a waterfall and a beautiful view. Afterwards, we’ve got reservations at a Japanese restaurant to round out the evening. We’ll take some pictures.

Fun Home Controversy

Fun HomeIf you haven’t read Alison Bechdel’s incisive graphic memoir Fun Home, we highly recommend it.

Her off-Broadway play of the same name was staged at the Public Theater in New York and was a knockout! Scripted by Lisa Kron, the play is a musical, depicting the autobiographical story.

Bechdel’s father, a closeted gay man, commits suicide mere months after Bechdel comes out to her parents.

Now, the University of South Carolina is under fire for recommending the book, one of many, to incoming freshmen.  The state’s legislature determined that this was not suitable reading for “children.” Although we would say that 17- and 18-year-olds about to enter an institute of higher learning are not exactly “children.”

The issue is Bechdel’s lesbianism, not, apparently, her father’s suicide.

We’re writing a Sex Tips piece on hookups, dating and the current social scene.

Intrigued by a New York Times article, “The End of Courtship?” we thought we’d get your ideas and opinions first.

“The word ‘date’ should almost be stricken from the dictionary,” wrote one 30-year-old single. “Dating culture has evolved to a cycle of text messages, each one requiring the code-breaking skills of a cold war spy to interpret.”

Lazy Summer

Up a lazy river…that’s where we wish we were this hot August. But we’re settling for some air conditioning and baseball games and watching the Olympics.

Oh, those cute little hotties with their gymnastics feats. It’s great! We loved London’s welcome to the world in the opening ceremonies too.

How about those female weight-lifters? Yikes! This is what comes on the telly late at night. The oddball sports, we call them. Canoe slalom, dressage. We’ll probably watch some of that, the mincing horses—utterly enjoyable.

In the Spring

Here are our favorite frolics to celebrate springtime, good for lovers, good for romance, good for hookups!

• Corny as it sounds, our favorite way to welcome spring is to take a walk. Hold hands. Sip an iced coffee along the way. Say hello to the neighbors…or not…

• Have lunch at the beach. Pretend it’s your first date.

• Borrow a friend’s dungeon. Okay, everybody doesn’t have a friend with a dungeon. But making love in somebody else’s “crash pad” is terribly sexy. Bring your own toys.

• Single and randy? Pick up a girl. Hit your favorite bar or coffee shop, make contact and take her home. Indulge yourself in a one-night stand.

• Go dancing. All that heat and sweat and oozing energy feeds the libido like nothing else.
