Taking a Break

Friday, March 18th, 2016

Christi Cassidy and Nan Kinney

It’s not just the publicity stunts of Donald Trump and Company that’s got us in a mood for a break. It feels like that moment of calm before March Madness and the Final Four. Easter—Peeps and Cadbury Creme Eggs, anyone? Baseball’s Opening Day.

Lots of other people must be feeling it too, because we’ve had a run on Bend Over Boyfriend and Bend Over Boyfriend 2.

Most people have been buying both to save 15%. It’s a good deal.

It’s been an eventful month for us, with a trip Minnesota to visit family, and that was lovely.

But we’re ready for a break too. What’s tickling our fancy these days? The classics, of course!

Till next time,

Nan & Christi

Spring Is in the Air

White roses

We hope romance was in your stars last month, and if it wasn’t, maybe it’ll come your way soon!

We had a very romantic Valentine’s Day weekend, extra  nice because in the U.S. it was a long weekend with a Monday holiday to honor Presidents’ Day. Luxury.

Spring is in the air here, with crocuses peeking their heads up in the garden. Softness in the air. We head to Minnesota the coming week to honor Nan’s mom, who died peacefully at age 97.

Our friend Jeanne Cordova died of cancer in January, and we’ve been keeping her and her partner in our thoughts this weekend; Jeanne’s memorial service is today in Los Angeles.

You know Jeanne as the author of the Lambda Book Award winner When We Were Outlaws (Spinsters Ink, 2011). It’s an inspiring book we highly recommend, about the radical lesbian-feminist movement in L.A. in the 1970s.

We will be forever inspired by people like Jeanne Cordova, Honey Lee Cottrell and other strong lesbian voices we have loved and lost.

Till next time, we wish you fabulous sex and romance,

Nan & Christi

In Memoriam: Honey Lee Cottrell

“Coastbound Train Rachel and Elexis"

“Coastbound Train, Rachael and Elexis,” 1985. Image by Honey Lee Cottrell. Among her well-known photographs is this powerful image of Rachael Williams (the first Ms. Leather) and Elexis that first appeared in On Our Backs.

You may have known Honey Lee Cottrell. For sure you know her life’s work as a photographer and cinematographer.

Honey Lee Cottrell passed away on September 21, 2015, of pancreatic cancer. She was 69. We lost a friend and compatriot of Nan’s from  the early days of On Our Backs and Fatale Video. She was one of the “core four” at On Our Backs, along with Nan, Deborah Sundahl and Susie Bright.

Deborah Sundahl wrote of Honey Lee: “The most influential photographer of the 1980s and ’90s in her innovative and original representation of lesbian sexuality. Her specialty was articulating the butch-femme of the 1950s for a new era of lesbians.”

Honey Lee filmed Clips, which featured “the first-ever-seen-on-screen authentic female ejaculation. Nan said, “She was right where she needed to be to get that shot, strong and steady to capture the event.” What an historic event it was, too.

Honey Lee was a force behind the scenes at Fatale and lesbian pornography. She chronicled the world of lesbian sexuality at On Our Backs, Fatale Video and beyond. Her subjects were open and honest with her, gazing directly into the camera’s lens.

What writers and academics refer to as “the lesbian gaze,” Honey Lee personified in her work. Her images were published in books and journals and shown in exhibitions and shows. Her work is archived at the Human Sexuality Collection at Cornell University. (Read the whole obituary, written by Brenda Marston of Cornell University, here.)

We’ll let Honey Lee have the last word:

“The lesbian gaze meant that there was a contemplation,” she said, “a restraint, a sincerity and a warrior-quality. This lesbian look was compelling. While your heterosexual woman model might compel the rest of the world to look at her, a lesbian was addressing you.”

Until next time,

Candida Royalle

Summer is over here in the Northern Hemisphere, and autumn beckons. Recently a much admired and well-loved feminist pioneer friend and colleague of ours died.

Candida Royalle, many of you know, was the visionary feminist pornographer who pioneered what became “couples porn,” which could be part of the mainstream. As Nan wrote in her sweet and moving column, “Remembering Candida,” Candida’s goal was always “to open up the mainstream porn market to porn made by women for women. And she achieved that goal.”

We posted a nice pic of Candida in the blog piece  and on Fatale’s Facebook page. One classy lady!

Speaking of pictures, do come on over and follow us on Pinterest. Some of our boards include “Lesbians We Love,” “Femme Thrills,” “Dyke Pride,” “Butch” and more.

If you’re not familiar with Pinterest, think of it as a social media website with lots of bulletin boards where you can “pin” your pictures. It’s fun. Come join us!

Remembering Candida

Candida Royalle

We mourn the loss of Candida Royalle, who died last Monday, September 7, 2015.

“Candida really started the ‘Couples’ market in mainstream porn industry. She was the godmother, really the mother of the Couples porn movies,” Nan writes.

“I admired her for bringing her feminist porn to the mainstream market, that was always her goal, to open up the mainstream porn market to porn made by women for women.

“And she achieved that goal. Beautifully produced movies focusing on women’s pleasure. Always supportive and generous to us at Fatale, with her time and advice. She was one of our role models as we made our way bringing real lesbian porn to lesbians.”

Lazy Days of Summer

This note arrived in our inbox last week, reading: “As someone who knew nothing about lesbian pornography or that companies like yours existed I think it is very cool you do what you do.”

Summers always bring us the sense of possibility. The days are long and lazy. It’s a delicious feeling. Like when we were kids and had long, long days stretched out ahead of us, no school, nothing to do.

Were we innocent? Not entirely!

Some days we’d hang with packs of other kids and go roaming the streets, just looking for trouble.

Other days called for hibernating with a book.

Now and then there were swimming pools or a day trip to the beach to go swimming.

Our admirer went on: “I am a heterosexual male and knowing that there is an outlet and group of artists and business people making sure there are erotic and sexual media for everyone makes me glad to be American.”

Mostly, on those long summer days, there was nothing to do, and that’s what spurred the sense of possibility. We could do anything, or nothing.

We could be anything.

On Our Backs

Later, it was knowing what might be possible that led first to On Our Backs and then to Fatale Video, now us, Fatale Media.

Our admirer concluded, “I think you and your organization are trailblazers that make being human in all aspects better. Sincerely impressed.”

The note was signed simply, “JM.”

To that we say, thank you, JM. Thank you for reminding us of why we’re here, and the possibilities still in sight.

Till next time, we wish you happiness and fabulous sex!

Courtney Trouble’s Sizzling Summertime Fun

San Francisco Pride March 2015

We started off the summer in San Francisco, just in time for #LoveWins and the amazing San Francisco Pride March. We had a blast, just the two of us staying downtown for the weekend.

We hung out with the one and only Shar Rednour and her wife, Jackie Strano, producers and stars of some of Fatale’s all-time bestsellers (Hard Love, Sugar High Glitter City, Talk to Me Baby).

We also saw Lulu Belliveau, who is making a documentary about San Francisco dyke life in 1988, called Dyke ’88 and including life at On Our Backs, and she interviewed Nan and many others on her visit from London.

Here’s a picture on Fatale’s Facebook page (safe for work) of Nan, Lulu and Ele, Lulu’s girlfriend and the camerawoman, after the shoot.

Courtney Trouble

Courtney Trouble has a new summertime lesbian hottie now at Fatale. My Best Friend’s Perfect Pussy finds Courtney on comfortable ground—queer girls havin’ lots of fun with each other, including a threesome slumber party!

It’s one of our favorite Courtney Trouble films! Lots of femme-femme action, but with nice doses of butch insertion (ahem) when and where it’s most wanted. Delicious!

Check out My Best Friend’s Perfect Pussy and plot your own perfect summer slumber party!

Till next time, we wish you happiness and fabulous sex!

Nan and Christi’s Excellent Adventure

Cannon Beach Oregon

We celebrated Nan’s birthday this year by heading off to the beach. Cannon Beach in Oregon, to be specific, about an hour and a half west of Portland.

The weather couldn’t have been nicer—partly sunny days, not too much rain. All the rhododendrons were in bloom, striking against the grayish skies, the cedar-shingle houses that line the town.

Our place had a picture window and view of the Pacific Ocean, although we were a few houses back from the steps to the beach itself. A big kitchen, dining room and living room made it the perfect place to entertain Nan’s sister and her family, who came down from Seattle and Tacoma to visit for a couple days.

Pictures—all safe for work—are posted here at Fatale’s page on Facebook.

Till next time, we wish you happiness and fabulous sex!
