#SmartSmut

Saturday, March 22nd, 2014

Are you ready for some #SmartSmut? This year’s Feminist Porn Awards ceremony, the 9th Annual, is ready to rock and roll your ideas of what porn is. Sponsored by the sex shop Good for Her, the event takes place on Friday, April 4th, at the Castlefield Event Theatre on Yonge Street in Toronto.

It’s not too late to score tickets and rub shoulders with your favorite porn stars.

The Feminist Porn Conference, organized by Tristan Taormino, is held at the University of Toronto, April 5-6, 2014. This is a knock  ’em out conference where sex meets ideas, and some of the smartest people in the industry talk, laugh and share their vision for the future.

Courtney Trouble

Courtney Trouble is giving the closing keynote, too. If you don’t know Courtney’s wide range of work, we recommend you start with recent films of hers, the award-winning Lesbian Curves and Hard Femme.

Check out last year’s FPCon weekend roundup, “Moments from FPCon,” a review of the conference and  more from the Feminist Porn Awards, when Nan was honored with the Trailblazer Award.

We’ll be there in spirit, hashtagging #FPCon2 and #SmartSmut!

Fun Home Controversy

Thursday, February 27th, 2014

Fun HomeIf you haven’t read Alison Bechdel’s incisive graphic memoir Fun Home, we highly recommend it.

Her off-Broadway play of the same name was staged at the Public Theater in New York and was a knockout! Scripted by Lisa Kron, the play is a musical, depicting the autobiographical story.

Bechdel’s father, a closeted gay man, commits suicide mere months after Bechdel comes out to her parents.

Now, the University of South Carolina is under fire for recommending the book, one of many, to incoming freshmen.  The state’s legislature determined that this was not suitable reading for “children.” Although we would say that 17- and 18-year-olds about to enter an institute of higher learning are not exactly “children.”

The issue is Bechdel’s lesbianism, not, apparently, her father’s suicide.

Bechdel reacts to the controversy in a good article.

U.S. Supreme Court Rules for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

SCOTUS rules on DOMA Prop 8

This morning we have reason to celebrate.

Two life-changing, landmark decisions were issued by the United States Supreme Court.

  • The Defense of Marriage Act, also called DOMA, was stuck down.
  • Proposition 8, or Prop 8, which would have banned same-sex marriage in California, was dismissed. Same-sex marriage in California is now legal.

President Obama said: “The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts.”

“So glad we’re still moving in the right direction, towards tolerance!” wrote a commentator on the Washington Post article posting.

In recognizing same-sex marriage, the Supreme Court has recognized gay rights as a civil rights issue. At last.

Congratulations to the Prop8 plaintiffs, to the lawyers and organizations who worked so hard and persevered on these cases and to the millions of supporters who have fueled this movement.

Jason Collins, Brittney Griner and Gay Athletes

Brittney Griner

We were encouraged by Jason Collins’s brave declaration of his gayness this week. There was lots of kudos and congratulations buzzing about on Facebook and Twitter.

We also thank some friends for pointing out that Jason Collins was preceded in coming out in professional sports by Brittney Griner, pictured here, who told an AP reporter in an April 17, 2013 article for SI.com that she is a lesbian.

Thanks to Mother Jones calling this fact out.

Pro sports is better for both these brave declarations. We hope that sports in general and pro sports in particular continue to accept diversity within its ranks.

Toronto Porn Weekend

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Tristan Taormino, Shar Rednour and Nan Kinney at #FPCon

We’ve been traveling the last couple of weeks, off to Toronto for the first annual Feminist Porn Conference, where Nan and Shar Rednour gave a great presentation on lesbian porn from the 1960s – 2000s, “Lesbo Retro: A Dyke Porn Retrospective.”

But best of all, Nan received the Trailblazer Award at the Feminist Porn Awards on Friday night!

We’ve posted some pictures and will post more.

For our friends who weren’t there or couldn’t make it this year, here are some completely subjective notes, and links to more resources. Don’t miss the piece in the Daily Beast.

The 8th annual Feminist Porn Awards were held on Friday night, April 5, 2013, at the Capitol Events Theatre in Toronto. Good for Her, the sponsors, put on a stellar show. There were performances by Coco La Crème, Lena Love and Axel Blows & Mahogany Storm. Friends from near and far were all in attendance, including Courtney Trouble, whose Lesbian Curves won Hottest Dyke Film.

The FPA Trailblazer Award given to Nan was a complete surprise! Shar Rednour presented it, and you should have seen the smile on Nan’s face!

To see the entire list of award-winners, check out Good for Her. Kudos to Good for Her diva Carlyle Jansen for a spectacular party.

For an excellent overview of the Toronto weekend, don’t miss the Daily Beast article by one of our favorite people, Rachel Kramer Bussel (www.rachelkramerbussel.com), “Organic, Fair Trade Porn: On the Hunt for Ethical Smut.”

For the weekend told in Tweets, check out Storify, a compilation by Tristan Taormino of #FPCon tweets that really does express the excitement of the weekend!

You know where we’ll be next year for the 2nd annual FPCon for sure!

Trans Justice Funding Project

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

Karen PittelmanOur friend Karen Pittelman wrote this note to us, and while the deadline for grant applications has passed, the need for donations is just as great and will do just as much good. We urge you to share this information and to make a tax-deductible donation to the Trans Justice Funding Project.

Karen writes:

The TJFP is a community-led giving initiative to support grassroots organizing for trans justice. We have an amazing panel of seven activists from across the country who will meet in March to make the grants. All we need is to reach our goal of raising $50,000 for them to give away!

Why a trans justice funding project? Because so little money goes to grassroots organizations run by and for trans people. Especially groups that center the leadership of trans people organizing around their experiences with racism, economic injustice, transmisogyny, ableism, immigration, incarceration and other intersecting oppressions. And yet so many people rely on this crucial organizing work!

Why a community-led decision-making process? When donors and foundations control the giving process, it gives them a lot of power over what kind of work gets done and what organizations have to do to keep themselves afloat. As my co-organizer Gabriel Foster says, “This project is about investing in communities making decisions by and for ourselves.”

So if you know anyone who might be interested in giving or groups that might want to apply for 2014, will you please help me spread the word? We have a super-simple application form online right now in English and Spanish.

You can also donate online, so giving is easy too! And if you’ve thinking about it, now would be the perfect time to do it–a donor has offered to match every contribution as part of the LGBTQ Giving Challenge. So if you give now, your donation will be automatically doubled!

Thank you so much for your help, everybody. And if you have any questions or would like to talk more about any of this, just let me know!

Love, Karen

sexy pink roses

Happy Valentine’s Day!

We have been traveling a lot this last month, short trips here and there, family and work and fun, oh my!

Valentine’s Day lets us take a breath, remember why we love each other, remember why taking a night off from the usual routine adds much-needed zest into the depths of winter.

Single? We say, treat yourself. Go out with a friend and leave your devices in your pockets or purses. Buy yourself a box of chocolate and eat it. Treat yourself to dinner and a movie…the sexier the movie, the better!

Whether it’s romance or pure pumping passion that you want, enjoy the day!

Yours in good love and sex,

Nan & Christi
